David brings to the Employers' Chamber the experience of over 40 years in commerce as a manufacturer involved with the importation of materials and new technologies, the production of a wide variety of industrial and consumer products, with the ultimate responsibility for the marketing and profitable sales to both the domestic and international markets. He recently successfully sold his company, HydraQuip NZ Ltd, but he remains in close association with other SME companies through his company, Haldav (NZ) Ltd, which assists small business clients.
Among his business experience David has held roles in the general management of medium to large enterprises which employ significant numbers of staff and during this time his interest in industrial and employment relations has developed. He also has governance experience having served on the Christchurch College of Education Council for 10 years from 1996 to 2006, holding the role of Deputy Chair for the last six years of his tenure. He is currently a Councillor on the Christchurch Polytechnic Council and a Citizen Trustee of the Otautahi Education Development Charitable Trust.
David is the Chairman of Clown Doctors NZ, a recently registered charitable trust which has now been established in NZ. The Trust trains and manages clowns who regularly visit the ill and aged patients in an effort to brighten their spirits by working on the premise 'that laughter is the best medicine'.
David is very interested in the issues of good governance, advocacy with local and central government, and continuing education. He is an active member of the Canterbury Branch of the Institute of Directors and a Fellow of the NZ Institute of Management.
David is the Honorary Consul for Austria in the South Island and he enjoys the diversity of the experiences this role brings. He is a committed Cantabrian having raised his family here and enjoys his involvement in the business community as well as the cultural side of city life. He is proud of the success of the Canterbury Employers' Chamber of Commerce - the hard working staff and the high calibre of the management and board members. The Employers' Chamber is well known and a highly respected 'voice' in business in New Zealand.
He states that:
"The Employers' Chamber Board brings together industry and commercial experience that is put to good use to support the Chief Executive and his team to achieve the strategic and tactical direction that organisation must take. The governance and management of my own enterprise and the challenges of that necissitated close attention to all influencing factors. It is these skills I bring to the Employers' Chamber board. Our members expect proactive governance and lobbying. I bring these attributes to the board and I would like to continue to contribute to the well-being of our region's business community."
