Promoting Your Interests

Whether it is lobbying local authorities or national government, we aim to protect members' interests through taking a pro-active role within the business community and fighting for what we believe in.

As a collective voice we can lobby local and central Government and champion policies that allow New Zealand businesses like you to:

  • Be internationally competitive
  • Have balanced employment, economic and environment legislation
  • Have compliance and tax levels that foster growth and investment
  • Innovate and develop skills
  • Work within an environment that fosters the production of high-value goods and services

In the context of local government, the Employers' Chamber ensures that all city and district councils in our region are aware of the voice of business. This includes submissions on councils' draft annual plans, draft strategic plans and on vital infrastructure issues such as transport, water, sewage and waste management.

Much of our 'big picture' work is carried out through Business NZ - the central organisation that we helped found and are an integral part of.  With Business NZ, we have successfully lobbied for a number of policy changes that have directly affected members, including:

  • Two key clauses have been included that outline where flexible working is non-compulsory - namely, where it imposes additional cost on businesses or where it detrimentally affects the ability of a business to meet customer demand
  • Lobbied against the proposed plan to ensure all contractors do not earn less than the minimum wage
  • Improved consultation between businesses and ACC
  • The lowering of business tax from 33% to 30%
